Ajanta caves are at a distance of 99 km from Maharashtra's Aurangabad district. It is believed that Ajanta caves began carving from 2nd century BC and ended at sixth century Ad. The whole program from the evolution of Buddhist architecture could be traced in Ajanta. Images interpreting the lifestyle stories of Buddha and animal figures were carved out through the large rocks.
Everything including the contemporary people, kings, slaves, women, males and children are seen within the Ajanta wall paintings interlaced with flowers, vegetation, fruits, birds and beasts. There are also the figures of yakshas, kinneras (half human and 50 percent hen) gandharvas (divine musicians), apsaras (heavenly dancers), which were of concern to the folks of that time.
The total variety of caves which includes the unfinished 1 is thirty of which five (9, 10, 19, 26 and 29) are Chaitya-Grihas along with the relaxation are Sangharamas or Viharas (monasteries). The caves one, 2, 16 and 17 may be rated amongst the greatest artistic functions of human artwork.
